Sleep role in muscle recovery from exercise-induced injuries

The relationship between sleep and recovery from exercise-induced muscle injuries, with a focus on athletes and military personnel. Insufficient sleep combined with high training loads increases the risk of muscle injuries. Adequate sleep enhances muscle repair by regulating hormonal and immune responses, including the release of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). The review highlights the potential of sleep extension to aid recovery by controlling inflammation and promoting muscle regeneration. Although promising, further direct studies are required to establish clear guidelines for leveraging sleep in injury prevention and recovery.
