This study, part of the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) Study, investigates the link between sleep duration and mortality. Data from over 135,000 participants show that both insufficient (≤5 hours) and excessive (≥9 hours) sleep increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. The findings hold across different ethnic groups and are consistent for both men and women. The study also suggests that while sleep duration affects CVD-related deaths, it does not significantly influence cancer mortality. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and physical activity, were accounted for in the analysis, reinforcing the independent association between sleep and mortality.
